Minor Characters
Afi is a slave who helps Amari stay alive when they are being transfered to America. Afi has been traded multiple times so she knows the ropes and without her help Amari certainly would have died. She is a very wise woman and practically adopts Amari as her own.
Bill is a ship worker who teaches Amari English while all of the other sailors are raping and beating up the other slaves. He is the only kind white person she meets during her time on the way to America.
Teenie is the cook for Mr. Derby, who inlists in help with her kitchen and gets Myna and Polly as her helpers. She is one of the few black slaves that Mr. Derby actually treats right. She is very stubborn, and she speaks her voice, even when she isn't asked to. She has a son named Tidbit and a dog named Hushpuppy.
Tidbit is Teenie's son, who likes to make trouble. He befriends Polly and Myna and shows them the ropes of the plantation. He brings the two girls together because he just likes to have fun while everyone else is tense. He's just an all-around fun-loving kid.
Hushpuppy is Tidbit's companion, his best friend, and the only real thing he has other than his mother. He loves to cause trouble and make a ruckus.
Clay Derby is Mr. Derby's son, who is as cruel and vicious as his father and he likes to make Myna feel like she's wanted and then he treats her like a slave again. He gets Amari as a birthday present and names her Myna, because he's hers. She's the only real thing he has. His father doesn't like him and wants to have another son, which I think leaded to him being just like his dad.
Mr. Derby, a plantation owner, who enjoys to be cruel to everyone except Isabelle, his wife.He is not a kind person and he likes to do things like trip someone, then beat them up because they shouldn't have tripped on his foot, even if it isn't their fault. He is racist and sexist. He blames his son because, when his first wife was having Clay, she passed away. He can love though because he loves Isabelle, his wife
Isabelle Derby is Mr. Derby's wife, who is very kind to the slaves. She is only a few years older than Amari and Polly, and is already having Mr. Derby's child. She cares for everyone of the slaves, and it shows when she checks on Myna when she gets whipped by Mr. Derby.
Noah is in love with Isabelle and Isabelle him. They both have a child together but he is very kind but very quiet. He is her "bodyguard" and is always by her. He causes a lot of trouble with Isabelle and Mr. Derby because of their love.
Dr. Hoskins is a very kind doctor who lets Myna, Polly, Hushpuppy, and Tidbit escape. He doesn't believe in slavery, which gets him into trouble.
Nate is the kid by the lake who helps them escape and gives them food. He is very kind and he and Polly like eachother.
Besa/Buck is Amari's one true love. He is a powerful and influential man, who is betrothed to Amari. He also gets sold as a slave.
Fiona is a slave owner but she treats the slaves right. She gives the four of them a wagon and a horse so they can make it to Fort Mose.
Domingo Salvador is the Spanish soldier that helps them get to Fort Mose. He is really kind but gets really scared when the wagon comes by them with Polly driving it.
Inez welcomes them to Fort Mose and tells Amari she's pregnant. She is really kind and is kind of like mother to Amari.
